WELCOME TO MUSIC AT CHAPMAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!
My name is Joanne Prendergast and I have the privilege of teaching your child/children the art form of music. Students at Chapman receive music instruction for 45 minutes on a four-day rotation of Music, Art, PE and Library. The music curriculum is designed to begin with basic skills and to move to more complex ones. Developing musical skills has always been impo rtant and now more than ever National and State Standards place an emphasis on functional musicianship.
HOW WILL WE GO ABOUT THIS?
A culture of enrichment "We Grow Thinkers" is embedded in our teaching and learning at Chapman. It is based on these 6 habits of thinking:
Asking Questions
Collaboration
Perseverance
Creating and Innovating
Thinking Flexibly
Presenting Ideas Confidently
Everyday we challenge our students to be creative and to think "out of the box". We use special tools to empower our students to take ownership of their own learning. We encourage them to share their story of learning as they grow.
Teachers are communicating instructional goals that include student interest and learning styles. We are creating assessments and implementing differentiation strategies to monitor student progress. You will be able to see your student's assessments on Progress Book.

WHAT WILL MUSIC CLASS LOOK LIKE?
Music educators study many different approaches, methods and philosophies that have one common goal...to teach children to become musically literate. In our music class, singing will be the foundation of music education. Through simple songs the children will develop rhythmic, melodic and harmonic skills. Movement activities will include singing games and folk dances. Listening to music, playing instruments, reading children's literature, creating and improvising music will be a part of the class. At Chapman we celebrate our diversity as our students learn songs, games and dances from other countries and cultures. I will use different thinking routines and strategies to help students to be critical thinkers and creative learners.
WILL MY STUDENT BE INVOLVED IN ANY MUSICAL PERFORMANCES THIS SCHOOL YEAR?
There will be opportunities for all children to participate in musical performances. Some are school-wide and others are grade-specific. Expect communication on these special events throughout the year. I look forward to working with all the children!!! Please email me at [email protected] or call me with any questions or concerns.
